Panera Bread is stop #16 for The Great Livermore Restaurant Challenge. It’s also one of the newest restaurant additions to our wonderful town of Livermore.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Chipotle, which shares the same building. I had heard that both were part of the same company, but after further research they are not. They do however seem to have a close relationship. They share ingredients, like chicken for example, and seem to often open restaurants next door to each other. Working together like this sounds like an efficient way to do business.

The layout of the restaurant is kind of funny. The dining area follows a “U” shape. The top right of the “U” is the entrance and ordering counter, the seating area follows down the shape of the “U” and the top left ends at the rest rooms. When you’re looking for a seat, you almost feel like you’re navigating a maze. It has a comfortable atmosphere, almost like you’re in the lobby of a fancy hotel with it’s leather chairs and fancy wall fireplace. There is also a separate dining room in the back that’s used for private parties or lunch meetings.

The food here is pretty good. My wife and I both ordered their “You Pick 2” where you choose two from your choice of a half-sandwich, cup of soup, and half cafe salad.

She had the Tomato Mozzarella Panini and Bistro French Onion Soup, while I went for the Asiago Steak Sandwich and Cream of Chicken Wild Rice Soup. We split a drink and filled it with the refreshing unsweetened Acai Berry Iced Tea. That deal runs $8.19 per meal. If you add a soda, add $1.99. We split the drink, so our total bill came to $20.02 after tax.

With both Panera Bread and Chipotle coming into Livermore, it gives us some great options to think about when lunchtime gets closer. I think they’ll be quite successful too. Not only will they get local customers like me, they’ll also lots of business from the thousands of people passing through on 580.
