1235 Jackson Gate Road
Jackson, CA 95642
Years ago, on my way to Placerville, I stumbled upon the Jackson Westover airport. It is a nice, well maintained airfield but there isn’t anything on the field other than a lounge with restrooms and a soda machine. Upon checking my “Pilots Guide to California Airports” I discovered that two local cab companies are available to get you to a restaurant, but which one?
I know a couple of people who have retired and either moved from this area to Jackson or have purchased a second home in the “Gold Country”. They have said that Teresa’s Place is the place for a wonderful Italian meal. As luck would have it, it is only a short cab ride from the Jackson airport.
Teresa Bassignani first came to the United States in 1913 and settled with her husband in Amador City. He was a miner and she worked as a cook in the mining company hotel. In 1921, with $400 savings, she moved to the present location and opened Teresa’s Place, originally as a boarding house for miners.
Dinners are served “family style” beginning with soup and bread, followed with a salad, pasta and ending with the dessert of your choice. The secret is not to fill up on the delicious minestrone soup and fresh bread, very hard to do! My favorite entrée is parmigiana either chicken or veal.
I encourage you to explore the wonders of the “Gold Country” and discover for yourself the history of California. When in the Jackson area, plan to dine at Teresa’s Place, you will be glad you did!
