Way back in the early 90’s, I used to deliver pizzas at Mary’s Pizza Shack up in Santa Rosa. Those were the good ol’ days. Well, except that one night my car was stolen during a delivery and totaled. Unfortunately I had cheap coverage and they never caught the guy. Yeah, that was a night to remember.

But this isn’t about me and my delivery adventures. This is about restaurant #35 of The Great Livermore Restaurant Challenge, where I ordered a pizza from Pizza Guys on North Vasco Road.

When I was delivering in the 90’s, the only way to order a pizza was with a telephone. Even though online delivery was featured in The Net in 1995, it really took a another decade for it to begin to hit mainstream. Now in 2014, we can also order with an app on our smartphone. While Pizza Guys does have an Android and iPhone app, I decided to order on their website. The big advantage to using the website over calling is that their current coupon specials are part of the menu. This is much more convenient than saving those mailers or printing coupons.

Pizza Guys Country Club +Pineapple

One of my favorite pizzas is the Maui Zaui at Round Table. The only problem I have with Round Table is that their pizzas are so darn expensive. A large Maui Zaui runs over $32 delivered (including delivery fee and $3 coupon).

It turns out that Pizza Guys has a inexpensive alternative with their Country Club pizza. It’s almost identical; just add pineapple and you have yourself a poor man’s Maui Zaui for just over $23 delivered (with fee and online special). It’s not an exact taste-for-taste match, but pretty similar. While I give Round Table’s version an edge, that edge is definitely not worth almost 10 bucks. Everyone has different tastes, so you’ll have to try it out yourself if it’s a worthy alternative.

While there is an option to tip online, I never do. My personal pizza delivery tipping policy is cash only and very generous. They get paid squat, only get a portion of the delivery fee, and beat the heck out of their cars. They are the grunts of the business, probably can’t afford worthwhile insurance, and their car will forever smell of pizza. Trust me, I know. I always encourage big tips. 🙂

Let’s just say that I have a place in my heart for pizza delivery guys and gals.

Have you tried Pizza Guys? How do you like their pizza? Do you think it’s a good value? Let us know in the comments below.
