Since everyone has been to an Applebee’s at one time or another, writing about my experience here would not be very surprising, let alone a very exciting read. Applebee’s is, well, Applebee’s.
So for #20 of The Great Livermore Restaurant Challenge, I thought I’d focus on something a little different. This time around, I decided to compare their menu photos to our actual meal in front of us.
We all know that the juicy burger we see on a TV advertisement looks nothing like the real fast food burger. We don’t think about the differences, but sometimes they are pretty drastic. If you’re up for a little refresher, take a peek at these “ads vs. reality” articles here and here.
So how does Livermore Applebee’s menu compare to real life? Read on to find out.
Classic Wings ($9.99): Starting off with the Classic Wings, the real basket (right) is actually reasonably similar to the photo (left). The big difference here is the mouth-watering glaze seen on the menu compared to the crispier and more seasoned appearance in real life.
Hand Battered Fish & Chips ($11.99): I ordered the Fish & Chips where the menu (left) and real thing (right) are pretty close to each other too. Portions are about right, the fries look a bit more seasoned on the menu, and the coleslaw actually looks better in person. The biggest difference here is the fish, where the batter is more golden and fluffier on the menu than what I had on my plate.
Blue Ribbon Brownie ($5.99): Now this is almost spot on. The only difference (not counting that we ordered a larger size) is that the cake part of the brownie is fluffier on the menu (left) compared to the denser cheesecake-like texture of our actual brownies (right). It’s hard to see as I took the photo almost straight down. But If you look close, you can see darker texture.
I have to say that Applebee’s does a pretty good job at maintaining reasonably accurate menu photos. Call me impressed! I think I’ll have to do this again later on during my challenge.
How was our experience here? Well, it was definitely much better than the average 1.5 star Yelp rating. That can’t help their business any. We actually had really good service and were all quite happy with our meals.
