It was a busy morning getting our house ready for trick-or-treaters; carving pumpkins, getting our costumes ready and decorating the house really builds up an appetite. My wife knew better and hid the large bag of Halloween candy to keep me from spoiling lunch.
Needing a break, we head downtown to grab a bite to eat. If candy is going to be our Yang, we better balance it out with Yin and find something light and healthy. We heard about a relatively new place called Artistic Table that offers just what we’re looking for.
Artistic Table is a cute little bistro across the street from Lizzie Fountain on South Livermore Avenue. The first thing you’ll notice is the large selection of beer that greets you as you walk in. They call it their “99 bottles of beer on the wall” wall. I added the extra wall, but you get the idea. I resisted counting as I admired their wonderful selection of craft beers. This wall of beer is only the beginning of their “general store” selection as you can also shop for cheese, jams, spreads and of course wine.
Wine and cheese are Artistic Table’s specialty, which is ironic being that the San Francisco Giants World Series parade was playing on their two TVs. They have a great selection of over 200 bottles of wine to pair with their Cheese Platter or other snacks. On tap, they offer a rotation assortment of over a dozen craft brews. Most were from California with a couple from the East Coast. Maybe they rotate them in, but I was surprised not to see anything from our awesome Livermore breweries. Beer on tap runs $7 or $8 per glass; if you’re up for tasting, a beer flight runs $10.
As I said before, cheese is their specialty. Artistic Table has a dozen different types of grilled cheese sandwiches. These aren’t ordinary grilled cheese sandwiches like you had as a kid, these are gourmet Grilled Cheese Panini Sandwiches that require the refined taste buds of an adult. They run $12 each and come with a side salad.
I went for The Wisconsinite which comes with cheddar, mustard, blue cheese and cranberries. If you like a little zing in your sandwich, the blue cheese and side of mustard will give it to you. It was picture perfect with its melted cheese and vibrant green salad. My wife ordered the $9 Salad and Half Sandwich Lunch Special and chose the Spinach and Artichoke Grilled Cheese Panini with the Pear Spinach Salad. Both of our meals were great, fresh and the type of meal we expected for a bistro such as this.
After we finished eating, the waitress asked if we wanted dessert. Any other day we would have said yes. With two huge bowls of candy waiting at home for
trick-or-treaters me, we laughed as we declined and asked for our check.
If you’re local or a tourist, it’s a great place to indulge in your wine and cheese fantasies. The atmosphere is very welcoming, refreshing and a little more bed & breakfasty from your typical restaurant or pub. They even host live music on weekends and you can even check out one of their weekly event like one of their tasting classes.
Next time your heading out for lunch or a night on the town, check them out. Artistic Table is a cute restaurant that fits right in with Livermore’s wine heritage and bustling downtown atmosphere.
